Our Commitment to Transparency

Transparency is inherent in our commitment to serve the patient by creating a vibrant, inventive and ethical culture that will help people lead better, fuller lives today, tomorrow and well into the future. Shire is committed to responsible sharing of clinical study data.

Shire is dedicated to enabling people with life-altering conditions to lead better lives by delivering innovative medicines to patients who need them. Shire’s commitment to clinical research goes beyond developing innovative medicine. We recognize that sharing clinical trial data with patients, healthcare providers, researchers and the public will improve public confidence in medicine and help all stakeholders make better healthcare decisions. As a global biotechnology company focused on rare diseases, we strive to earn the trust of our patients by protecting their privacy through continuous implementation of approaches that balance data utility, while mitigating the risk of personal data identification at the patient level.

Shire follows the Principles for Responsible Clinical Trial Data Sharing that were jointly adopted by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) and the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA).

Our pledge is to responsibly share clinical study data in a manner that is consistent with the following principles:

  • Safeguarding the privacy of patients and ensuring that patient perspective remains at the fore
  • Preserving scientific rigor and trust in regulatory systems, and
  • Maintaining incentives for investments in biomedical research.

Shire discloses clinical trial information for medications on publicly available websites at a number of points, including: at the time of patient recruitment, within one year of study completion, after marketing authorization and when investigational research programs have been discontinued. Since 2015, Shire has had systems and tools in place that have enabled the company to consistently register and report all studies according to regulations in a timely manner. The AllTrials Tracker (which identifies trials completed up to 2017 and posted on ClinicalTrials.gov), noted that all completed and eligible Shire trials had published results (i.e. 0% of trials are missing results). Shire is committed to the highest possible level of clinical trial transparency, exceeding some regulatory transparency requirements, industry guidelines and best practices by voluntarily expanding several disclosure standards. These voluntary efforts create value for our many stakeholders, including the regulatory, patient and research/medical communities as well as our employees, investors and the public overall. This increases communication and trust among the stakeholder groups.
